I donated blood last Wednesday and there were some complications during the donation. My blood was flowing out normally the first few minutes, it almost filled 1/3 of the blood bag and then it just stopped flowing. The nurse did everything to make it start flowing again; she adjusted the needle (which I read somewhere was a wrong procedure, they should never move the needle around when it's already in the body), she increased the pressure on the sphygmomanometer, she waited and waited, and I squeezed my palm even harder but no luck. Apparently my inner elbow started to swell horribly and I could see the nurse giving the other nurses okay-don't-panic face and of course I started to panic and I asked them a million questions about what was wrong. The only words I can hear was blood clot and underweight. After taking out the needle, they let me rest for a bit (almost fell asleep) and then applied a cooling gel on the swelling. They told me not to handle anything heavy on that arm for a couple a days then they said it should be fine and not worry about it.
I was wondering if anyone have donated blood before and experience anything like this? Not to mention the bruise that you get 2 days later.

Sorry, don't know anything about it as I have never been able to donate blood before. It's a shame, because I know I really should do it, but even reading this post made me feel dizzy, and I looked away from the picture even though I knew there weren't any needles in it. I'm a terrible person. And terrified. Of needles.
ReplyDeleteProud of you!
I heard you've to be at least 5o kg to donate blood. oh my gosh I'm so happy your blog's back! :) :)
ReplyDeleteSynne: Hey I dont think it's anything to be ashamed of. It's a choice and if you can't do it then it's completely fine. The bruise are completely normal and it went away after a week. I'm planning to do it again in a few more months :)
ReplyDeleteNatnat: Youuuu :) Hello. Well, I was 49kg when I donated (I think), and they said that should be good enough, have no idea what went wrong, maybe my arm is just small. Lol. Good to know someone is actually reading :)
